We need your donations to help us provide a summer surprise to these families!

Background:

Many of you may remember the 14 year-old swimmer who was killed in an automobile accident last July while on her way to swim practice.  She was from Chantilly and her summer swim team (Greenbriar) is an NVSL team.  Her family and friends are having a food drive in her memory and are asking local swim teams to participate.

It is called Christmas in July, and is geared toward needy children in the western Fairfax County area.  From now through July this group is collecting food items and small toys (see the attached list) to make “baskets” for these children.  I would like our league and teams to participate in this project, we can call our portion the Herndon Swim League Gives Back.

Teams can participate at whatever level they feel is appropriate.  Some may want to keep the theme of donating to children, those items from the list can be donated to WFCM for the baskets.  Other teams may just want to do a food drive in general, we could then donate those items to two local food banks servicing the Herndon area, Reston Interfaith and LINK.  Monetary donations could also be sent if desired by check to Our Neighbor’s Child as described in the attached, or to one of the other charities as desired by the contributor.

It will probably work best to have each team collect items in their own way, the head of the project is willing to work with us to allow regular drop-offs or even pick-ups of items for the children’s baskets.  Teams can begin collecting now, all the items for the baskets need to be in by July 20, and all other items can then be brought to the All-League Meets and will be distributed to the food banks after the meets.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TEAM’S PARTICIPATION!
